B1. "Working Through a Nazi Childhood"
------------------------------------------------------------------------
October 12, 2009 - 12:00PM Hassenf. Con. Ctr. - Levine Ross

The Center for German and European Studies presents a Jewish-German
Dialogue with Ursula Mahlendorf

Ursula Mahlendorf will discuss her latest work, "The Shame of Survival:
Working through a Nazi Childhood." In writing the novel, Mahlendorf drew
upon on her own experiences as well as her research in teaching students
about how Germans and German writers deal with their Nazi past.

“Rare are the accounts of what growing up in Nazi Germany was like for
people who were reared to think of Adolf Hitler as the savior of his
country, and rarer still are accounts written from a female
perspective, said Anna Kuhn, University of California, Davis. "This
book is a compelling memoir of a girl’s experiences growing up in Nazi
Germany that analyzes the lifelong implications of Nazi indoctrination
on a sensitive, thoughtful young woman.”

Mahlendorf is a professor emerita of German, Slavic and Semitic Studies
at the German department and Women’s Studies Program at the University
of California, Santa Barbara.

Lunch will be served.

B10. Our Soldiers Speak
------------------------------------------------------------------------
October 14, 2009 - 07:00PM Pearlman Lounge

Penned by a British volunteer for active service in the IDF, this
lecture compares and contrasts the urgency with which Israel’s sons
must become her defenders at a moment’s notice with the life of an 18
year old high school graduate in the Diaspora. It vividly retells the
transformation from boys to men that the soldiers of Israel must
undergo in order to protect the Jewish Homeland. Drawing on real
events, this address confirms what many hope is the case; that in the
moment of truth, the soldiers of the IDF are not found wanting, but
rather are capable of defending their land, humanely, each time they
are forced to do so – even as they pray for peace and a time when they
will no longer be called upon to march forward into the night.
